How to Keep Pets Calm During New Year Fireworks

While New Year's Eve can be a great excuse to ring in the new year in style, it can also be an overwhelming time for your furry family member. Whether you’re celebrating at home with your pet, or you head out for the evening, it is very likely that your pal will be hearing some fireworks to mark the occasion.

Even if your pet has typically been comfortable with fireworks in the past, many ageing pets can become more sensitive to noise and bright colours and may be more jumpy than we’re used to, so it’s important to give them extra attention and comfort on December 31 to keep them as calm and happy as possible.

What are you on the lookout for on NYE?

Because of the loud, sudden noises and bright bursts of colour and light that fireworks can bring, they can be a shock to our pets and put them on edge. If your senior pet is becoming more disorientated in their older age, they may feel even more confused and agitated.

Of course, you know your pet better than anyone so will likely be able to easily spot any changes in their behaviour. But here are some telltale signs of anxiety to keep an eye out for:

  • Trembling or shaking
  • Panting and pacing
  • Excessive meowing or barking
  • Hiding
  • Unusual urination
  • Hypersalivation

How can you help your pet to feel calm around NYE fireworks?

It’s all about preparation and taking extra time and care for your senior pet! There are often little steps that you can take that can make a huge difference to your pet’s NYE experience.

Create a safe space that is easily accessible

If possible, it is best to keep your pet indoors during fireworks. This can quickly help lessen the noise and brightness of the fireworks. You can take extra steps to create a space indoors that keeps your pet comfortable and feeling safe. This could include using curtains or blinds to block out bright light, closing doors and windows to muffle sound or even investing in Mutt Muffs to further block out the sound for your pet. If you want to do some extra prep, you may even practise playing fireworks audio for your pets from your phone or laptop while giving your pet treats, to make them feel more comfortable with these louder noises.

Consider their daily routine

We all know that special days like NYE can mean that normal routines can go out the window. If you can, on December 31, you can help your pet feel content and calm by keeping as much of their routine as possible. Not only will this be nice and familiar for them, but it will also help tire them out and release any pent-up energy throughout the day so that they’re not restless come the night time.

You may also want to give your pal some extra play time or cuddle time in their day so there is no doubt they’re feeling the love come the 9pm fireworks!

Create distractions

Alexa, play Calming Music for Dogs on Spotify! One way to keep your pet calm is by distracting them with calming pet music, with many ‘purrfect’ playlists available on Spotify. Making them focus on other things like their favourite toys and games (or even new toys and games) can be a great way to keep them entertained during the fireworks. The RSPCA also recommends using long-lasting treats to keep your pet occupied for longer periods of time - so consider giving them kongs, bones, dental chews and treat puzzles.

Keep an eye on your pet

This may seem obvious, but it can be all too easy to get swept up in the festivities and not pay as much attention to your pal - particularly if you’re watching the fireworks yourself! This will change from pet to pet, so go with your gut on this one. For some pets, they may treasure sitting with you and being surrounded by their favourite blankets and toys while you watch the fireworks together. For other pets who may want space, you may just want to poke your head into the room where they are hiding out and make sure they’re not too agitated. If you notice that your pet roams into a different room to hide under a bed or behind some furniture - as long as they’re not showing strong signs of distress, consider leaving them be!

Every pet deserves to see 2024 out in the best way possible, with a few simple steps, you can make New Years Eve a fun experience for you and your furry loved one.
